and a bird you would’ve loved the sight of brought the sky down

Tyler and I just got back from seeing the Mountain Goats play at the Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco. The show was phenomenal, Peter Hughes was really super great and Mr. Wurster, who I didn’t know what to expect from, was amazing. They came out for three encores and someone threw a pair of panties on stage. We learned that panties are called hipsters in Sweden. John Darnielle was a little drunk! He messed up the guitar parts on So Desparate, I think ’cause he put down a couple beers on stage, but that made the show all the more amazing. To think they played This Year, and The Sign, and Best Ever Death Metal! I would say the day was good luck, but minor (read: t-shirt related) unsavory events happened afterward, so there must’ve been some evil eye working against me. Oh well! Great performance indeed.

And Caves and So Many Dynamos were awesome too. I don’t think the very first band gave their name, they were crap anyway. “This next song is called ‘The Blackness of My Heart.’” Man, if you’re going to name one of your songs something like that, and then announce it all nonchalant, it better be like the darkest song I’ve ever heard. Which, [Band X], it was not.
